Developing a Compendium of Conservation Coalitions and Organizations in the U.S. Caribbean
Members of the Caribbean Landscape Conservation Cooperative (CLCC) are compiling information on nongovernmental conservation groups active in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. This survey will help us, and other organizations, to better understand "who is doing what" in conservation, the interests and capacities of different organizations, and to identify gaps in governance and science. The information will be used by the CLCC Steering Committee, Staff, Advisory Groups, Conservation Action Teams and the wider conservation community and public in the planning and implementation of conservation in our region.
We had previously developed a questionnaire that was sent to interested participants in the fall of 2012 and we want to thank all the organizations that took the time to complete it. However, as our initiative has grown, and after reviewing the previous questionnaire, we have developed an updated survey that gathers new information necessary for a complete picture of who is who. The final product will be a compendium publication in Spanish and English published online, as a hard copy report, and as an interactive map on the CLCC website's Data Center at http://www.caribbeanlcc.org/. This interactive map will show a graphical view of conservation in the U.S. Caribbean, and coalitions and organizations will be able to update their information regularly and decide what information they want public.
Organizations can benefit by contributing to the Compendium and participating with the CLCC in the following ways:
- Share information about your organization to a wide audience;
- Stay “on the map” and take advantage of the CLCC capacity to maintain and update your organizations information online;
- Leverage your resources and network with representatives of other coalitions interested in similar topics;
- Bring your voice to conservation science, planning and action initiatives that are being considered by the CLCC steering committee;
- Help shape the strategic planning of the CLCC;
- Receive news of CLCC activities, funding opportunities, meetings, and science products;
- Stay up-to-date on the most current conservation issues.
We encourage all nongovernmental organizations doing conservation in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands to participate in this 60-minute survey. We will be collecting surveys until July 15, 2013, and returning a synthesis of preliminary results and detailed analysis to follow by fall 2013.
