Neighbors in Ponce worried about asbestos

Residents of the exclusive sector El Vigia, in Ponce, are worried about the cleaning and removal of debris that apparently contain asbestos and lead, from the space that Word give way to the development of a touristic resort where the Ponce Intercontinental hotel used to be. However, the developers, CBC Development Corporation, denied that they removed asbestos and lead from the location. Stemming from the residents denunciation, the Environmental Quality Agency made an inspection and ordered the developer to stop all activity in the place.

Dr. Sandra Cruz Pol started the second part of her workshop “Energetic saving: help stop global warming” in which she presented solutions to dampen this phenomenon affecting the planet. In the first part of the workshop that took place on May 1st at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez, the Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor explained its causes and effects. Valuable donation to science

Corpse donation helps medical students to observe, feel and analyze human anatomy, its organs and parts. The Anatomical Donations Committee of Puerto Rico receives the corpses of people who, in life, expressed their desires to donate their organs, tissues and bodies. There the corpses are embalmed and moved to the Island’s four medical schools.

Amgen’s biotechnology manufacturing complex in Juncos, already recognized by its advanced systems and processes, received a distinction as one of 2006 “Top Deals”, given by the Site Selection magazine’s May edition. The recognition highlights Puerto Rico’s highly attractive investment climate, the Island’s commitment to development its biotechnology manufacturing capacity, and Amgen’s –the biggest biotechnology company in the World- decision to invest $1.2 billion dollars in its operations in Puerto Rico.

Urgent to hire more chemists

The Puerto Rico College of Chemists warned that to cover the need for chemists to attend all drunk driver cases in the Island’s courts, at least 15 chemists would be necessary, and the Government has only two full-time chemists and one part-time. The executive director of the College, Roberto Ramírez Vivoni, said that on average there are 46 drunk driver cases a day in Puerto Rico, and the two and a half chemists hired by the Department of Health are not enough.

New houses with renewable energy

As part of the initiatives to promote the use of renewable energy technologies in Mayaguez, the municipality has the first houses in Puerto Rico to be “plugged to the sun”. The houses have special structures in the kitchen and garage walls to facilitate the usage of stoves, refrigerators and gas dryers. The houses also have solar water heaters and the posts in front of them have special solar cells to illuminate the community without the need of electrical power.

To take advantage of the talent at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez, Mayagüez’s mayor José Guillermo Rodríguez signed an executive order in February to put the municipality to the disposition of everyone who is developing projects with alternative energy sources. The measure provides funding and incentives to people interested in establishing renewable energy companies in Mayagüez.

“Green” design and construction will be the subject of the Civil Engineers Institute of the College of Civil Engineers and Surveyors of Puerto Rico annual meeting, to be held on Friday, May 18, 2007, at the Convention Center. Oak embellishes Puerto Rican landscape

The Puerto Rican landscape is embellished by the white, pink, lavender, bright yellow, cardinal red and orange red brushstrokes of the oak. This tree, of the Tabebuia genus, is very common in the Caribbean: Cuba has over 30 species, most of them endemic; Hispaniola has over 20 species, almost all endemic also; Jamaica has 5 species, one of them endemic; and Puerto Rico has 4 species, 3 of them endemic.

Undergraduate students showcase their inventions

Eighteen undergraduate students of the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico (PUPR) presented their inventions with commercial potential, as well as companies they have developed during their college years in a fair held recently at the University. Among the 12 exhibitions were a portable back-pack electrical power generator, a hydroponics system that used solar power and a beach cooler/boom box that operates on solar power.
