Although Microsoft established operations in Humacao in 1990, it was at the end of 2006, that the multi-millionaire company opened a new manufacturing plant motivated by the launching of its new operative system Windows Vista, turning Puerto Rico in the exclusive supplier of their software in the Americas and the Caribbean.

Secret Marsh

The Secret Lagoon is a natural refuge for herons and ducks from Alaska, Canada and other parts of North America which travel a long way to share this “winter resort” with local species. Ironically, what today is a habitat for a diverse and unique ecosystem was only a puddle of mud before human intervention. While an entrance to the San Juan Bay was been dredged, a dike was created to store the ground being removed from the bay, leaving behind a deep depression. With time, fresh water found its way to the place and filled the lagoon, which naturally became a wetland.

The Estuary of the San Juan Bay is an environmental sanctuary where birds, manatees and crabs, among many other species, discreetly share their habitat with human beings. Although several government and non-government agencies have tried to preserve and restore the place, their efforts have not been able to counteract the impact of urban development. A few weeks ago the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a report which degraded the quality of the Estuary from acceptable to poor.
