'Urban' monkey loses its freedom

Two apples and a mango were enough to woo a monkey that was seen a few weeks ago in the mountains near the Amelia Industrial Park to enter a cage and be captured by the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources. The monkey, of the rhesus species, is believed to be part of a group of monkeys that escaped from a laboratory in Sabana Seca a few years ago.

Agreement for research labs in 9 public schools

Thirteen public schools in nine municipalities will have new research laboratories, funded by the municipalities and the Authority for the Financing of Infrastructure (AFI), announced yesterday the Governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá. This is part of an agreement between the Department of Education, AFI, and the Science and Technology Trust. Initially the project will impact 11,000 students with the goal of generating more interest and experience in science and mathematics. On the long term, it is hoped that there will be laboratories in all public schools, with the collaboration of the municipal administrations.

Dengue epidemic hits Puerto Rico

The Department of Health confirmed yesterday that with the hundreds of new cases of dengue in the Island in recent weeks, Puerto Rico could go through a severe epidemic, the worst since 1998. Dengue cases triplicated last week as compared to cases during the same period last year.

New flood-prone zones maps

The Planning Board is about to complete the first revision of the new flooding maps used by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The adoption of these maps could redefine the way construction if done in Puerto Rico in the future. The news may cause jubilation among those who want a prosperous and safer Island. However, there is suspicion among the scientific community. Experts are worried about the scientific analysis done to help design these new maps, and if the sea levels changes to be caused by global warming are being taken into consideration.

Faced with constant rains in the Island, the Epidemiologist of the State, Enid García Rivera, urged the population to check around their homes and work areas to eliminate possible Aedes aegypti –the mosquito that transmits dengue- nurseries. According to the epidemiologist, during the week of July30 to August 4th, 306 new suspected dengue cases were reported, for a total of 2,343, “well above expected”.

The Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company (PRIDCO) has established a Federal Technology Office in Washington, D.C., looking to give Puerto Rico better access to the $374,000 million market of contracts with the Federal Government. The new office, which will open in September, will be directed by Hector Feliciano, and its located in the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) headquarters.

Neuroscience community mourns the loss of Ann E. Kelley

Dr. Ann E. Kelley died on August 5th, 2007, after a long battle with cancer. She was an extraordinary neuroscientist that dedicated her life to academia and research. Her general areas of research included the neurobiological basis of appetitively motivated behavior, behavioral neuropharmacology and drug addiction. She was also a great advocate for women and minorities interests in science. She will be missed and her scientific legacy will live on.

Historical meeting to protect the Puerto Rican coastline

Stop the construction in coastal barrier zones will be the first request to be voiced by a group of local scientists that will meet next Friday, August 10, with Governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá with the goal of minimizing the consequences of climate change. It is not the first time that they voice their concern publicly. But it is the first time that renowned members of the scientific community will ask face to face the Governor and the heads of various governmental agencies in charge of environmental regulation, to stop issuing construction permits in these areas. Six representatives of the University of Puerto Rico and five agency chiefs will participate in this reunion with the Governor.
