2011 is the International Chemistry Year. Puerto Rico will begin to celebrate this month with the "Science Cafe", a series of seminars on the strong links between chemistry and our everyday lives. The chemistry festivities will reach their height later this year when Puerto Rico hosts the 43rd World Congress of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) from July 30 to August 7. This event will have the participation of seven Nobel Prize winners.

Endangered bird seen at the Northeastern Corridor

A group of bird watchers and members of the Northeastern Corridor Coalition spotted the piping plover ("Charadrius melodus") in this threatened natural reserve, highlighting the importance of protecting the area. The piping plover is on the list of critically endangered species.

Vía Verde pipeline plan faces federal hurdles

Carl Axel Soderberg, the EPA’s top official in the Puerto Rico and Caribbean region, said in a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers this month that the Vía Verde plan as drawn up does not comply with the federal Clean Water Act and is lacking adequate mitigation for environmental damages.
