According to geologists, during the next half million years, the sea will enter the Lajas Valley, creating a new island in the archipelago of Puerto Rico.

A study recently published in Neuron by scientists in Dr. Gregory Quirk's laboratory at the University of Puerto Rico investigated the role of the prefrontal cortex in the integration and regulation of of fear.

The newly established Puerto Rico Center for Environmental Neuroscience (PRCEN) uses a multidisciplinary approach “to understand the complex interplay of molecular, cellular, organismal, and ecosystem dynamics faced by organisms under the increasingly stressful conditions created by human impacts on the environment,” explained the director of the Institute of Neurobiology, Dr. Steve Treistman.

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) — One tropical lizard's tolerance to cold is stiffer than scientists had suspected. A new study shows that the Puerto Rican lizard Anolis cristatellus has adapted to the cooler winters of Miami. The results also suggest that this lizard may be able to tolerate temperature variations caused by climate change.

The Department of Chemistrty at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez recently inaugurated Puerto Rico's only DNA synthesis laboratory. This laboratory will focus in three research areas: disease diagnosis, anti-tumor drug synthesis, and the study of protein interactions in complex diseases. The laboratory received a $170,000 equipment donation from Pfizer.
