The Las Curias Lake, the only artificial lake constructed in San Juan during the Second World War, had the purpose of providing the metropolitan zone with water. Its operations were closed in 1980, while it no longer provides water for the community it does have an unique ecological and recreational value in the zone.

With the goal of advertising the new undergraduate academic offerings, the Computational Sciences and Software Engineering Programs from the Electric and Computer Engineering Departments at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus held the first UPRM Hacks App Inventor. This camp admitted 27 high school students to particpate in the program during the month of july.

(New York, N.Y. – July 25, 2016) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed that no further cleanup is needed at the Hormigas Groundwater Superfund site in Caguas and Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico. The site was added to the Superfund list because solvents were found in a public drinking water supply well, which is no longer in use. The community’s current drinking water supply is monitored regularly to ensure the water quality meets drinking water standards and is safe to consume.

The Computational Science Department from the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Univeristy of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus held the first Cyber Security Summer Camp for high school students. The camp focused on introducing participants to areas of cyber security, holding informative workshops and by providing pratical experiencies through the use of tools used by experts in security.

The effects of luminous pollution

Factors that influence bioluminescence were measured and observed at the Puerto Mosquito Bay in Vieques and in St. Croix. Results show that luminous pollutions influences bioiluminescence in two ways, by inhibiting the bioluminescence of the dinoflagelates and by skewing the perceived luminosity of the observed bioluminescence.
