Inventors' showcase

The First Forum of Inventors was a great opportunity to showcase the Puerto Rican creativity, gathering more than a hundred participants that included entrepreneurs, inventors, academics, and state functionaries, with the purpose of promoting the development of new ideas and educating about the resources available to support inventors. The inventors assisting the activity pointed out the importance that the government creates measures to support patenting and commercialization of inventions.

MD Anderson donated a financial analysis system to the UPR’s Cancer Center, which will help this institution to execute a healthy administrative system, without losing its research focus. This model integrates information from several areas like research, clinical services and pharmacy, among others. This data is integrated with other pieces of information, like funding or donations and revenues from medical-hospital services. The system analyzes all the variables and provides a financial radiography that becomes the starting point for some decision making.

The new Program for the Detection of Secondary Hyperparathyroidism, created by the Renal Council and sponsored by the Renal Division of Abott, wants to raise awareness in diabetic, hypertension and kidney patients about their risks of suffering secondary hyperparathyroidism, a vitamin D and calcium deficiency in the blood, caused by an excessive production of the parathyroid hormone.

Biodiversity in the Caribbean

The Caribbean ecological hotspot, which group the Bahamas, the Lesser Antilles and the Greater Antilles, is one of the of the five, most important, areas for the conservation of global biodiversity. It is estimated that the Caribbean has 13,000 species of plants, of which more than 6,500 are endemic. There are more than 600 species of birds in those islands, of which 160 are endemic. The Caribbean has 90 species of mammals, and more than half are endemic. These islands are very rich in reptiles and amphibians: of 500 reptile species in the islands, 94% is endemic; there are 170 endemic species of amphibians in the region, including the coqui.

Alice Francisco El Koury is an excepcional woman whose prolific scientific career did not halt her maternal instinct and her inmense joy of living in a time when being a woman in science was a handicap. Alice founded the Department of Microbiology of the UPR, the Puerto Rican Society of Microbiologists, the College of Medical Technologists of Puerto Rico, the Medical Technology Program of the University of Sagrado Corazon, among many other achievements.

Experimental harvests of peach and raspberry, part of a UPR in Mayagüez project, are starting to pay off. This project wants to introduce new fruit varieties in the Island to increase the local agricultural product offer. The kind of peaches and raspberries being harvested in Adjuntas and Lajas are varieties that adapt to the tropical weather.

Pall Life Sciences, global leader in the manufacture of filtration, separation and purification devices for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, announced the expansion of its operations in Fajardo, with a $58 million investment. With this expansion, the company could transfer to the Island all its filters manufacturing operations, which will cause an increase of 240 people in its workforce.
