Today (March 12, 2006) El Nuevo Día reports on little-known treasure for many Puerto Ricans: the annual migration of humped whales to the channel of Mona. The humped whales arrive from Greenland, Canada, northern U.S. and Norway to mate and give birth in the warm Caribbean waters. The article mentions that "Puerto Rico is also visited by other species of whales, like the orca, sperm whale, pilot whale, minke whale, but the most abundant one is the humped whale that has more coastal habits and is the one that jumps with more frequency." It is not necessary to go out to sea to see the whales: you can see them from the Rincón Lighthouse.

Record number of patents credited to Puerto Rican inventors: UPR is conspicuous by its absence

This article is reproduced by CienciaPR with permission from the original source.

The Caribbean Business published this week (March 2, p. 28) a significant increase in the number of patents filed this year by Puerto Rican inventors. However they are quick to point out in their article that the number of patents filed in Puerto Rico is still significantly below those filed by inventors in Ireland and Singapore, Puerto Rico's main competitor economies. They also state that for the first time since 1999 not a single patent was issued by the University of Puerto Rico. This article raises some interesting questions regarding the role of academic research in entrepeneurship and the economy.
