The Agents of Change Empowerment and Retention Program, best known by the Spanish acronym PARACa, is an initiative organized and carried out by the non-profit organization Mentes Puertorriqueñas en Acción (MPA). MPA is composed of students and young professionals aware of the great challenges facing our society both today and the consequences that we could suffer tomorrow. This group of emerging professionals is characterized by recruiting agents of change who are identified by their commitment, leadership and execution at a young age with Puerto Rican society and who are willing to work for the progress and well-being of the country.

Amyloid formation is directly associated with the development of Alzheimer’s, Parkingson’s, Huntington’s, and many other degenerative diseases. Dr. Juan Lopez-Garriga’s lab at the UPRM is currently investigating H2S’s role in the inhibition of amyloid formation.

Ciencia Puerto Rico support summer internships for students who are interested in leadership and professional development through the PARACa program of the non-profit organization Mentes Puertorriqueñas en Acción. Here, we present a guest post by Christina López, a student at Cornell University, who participated in this program with Ciencia Puerto Rico during the summer of 2014. Yale Ciencia Initiative is Recognized by White House for Answering Call to Action on Hispanic Education

For a second time this year the Yale Ciencia Initiative has been recognized by The White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics (WHIEEH). This time the organization has been highlighted for committing to launch The Voice of Experience, a bilingual online resource to help inform students about career possibilities in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) through the examples and “voices” of successful Latino STEM professionals.

Washington, D.C. – Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR, www.cienciapr.org), the world's largest network of Puerto Rican scientists and a project managed by the Yale Ciencia Initiative, was recognized by the White House as a "Bright Spot” in Hispanic Education. The award was granted by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.

CienciaPR is 1 of 17 initiatives across the entire United States to be highlighted in the area of ​​science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The community, which through an innovative web-based platform brings together thousands of Hispanic scientists, students and educators worldwide, was recognized as a leader in promoting science education and careers in STEM among Hispanics.

CienciaPR inicia talleres para forjar a las futuras científicas de Puerto Rico

San Juan, Puerto Rico. – La organización sin fines de lucro Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR), la Universidad Yale, y la Fundación Amgen darán inicio a la serie de talleres del programa “Semillas de Triunfo” que le brindará la oportunidad a niñas de séptimo a noveno grado de adentrarse al mundo de las  carreras en ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas (STEM, por sus siglas en inglés). Los talleres que comienzan este próximo sábado, 22 de agosto en el Recinto de Ciencias Médicas en San Juan, serán liderados por un grupo de científicas e ingenieras puertorriqueñas destacadas en sus campos profesionales y que buscan inspirar a  una nueva generación de “Niñas Embajadoras en STEM” para beneficio de sus comunidades.

Buildings and designs are appearing to have more curves, and thanks to technology and digital programs that allow parametric design, architecture appears to be more organic. The constant search for blurring the line between the natural environment and the built environment is increasingly evident. However, it cannot be based on image, that subjective label that dominates our culture when thinking about architecture. In a lecture given at Berkeley by Janine Benyus, founder of the Biomimicry Institute, she emphasizes the importance in making design decisions.
