Dr. Daniel Colón-Ramos, professor of neuroscience and cell biology at Yale University and president of the board of directors of the non-profit organization Ciencia Puerto Rico, has been elected to the prestigious National Academy of Medicine (NAM).

Election to the NAM recognizes individuals with outstanding professional achievements in the biomedical and health sciences fields and who have demonstrated a commitment to public service. Being elected to this Academy is one of the most prestigious recognitions in the fields of health and biomedical sciences.

NEW HAVEN, CT - Dr. Daniel Colón Ramos, a Puerto Rican scientist, associate professor at Yale University and a co-adjunct professor at the Institute of Neurobiology at the University of Puerto Rico, was selected last month to receive two important recognitions from of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), one of the leading scientific agencies in the United States.

You could say that the life of Dr. Daniel Colón-Ramos is one big game of connect-the-dots. A native of Palo Hincado in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico, and now associate professor at Yale University, Daniel investigates how neurons make connections to form a functional nervous system.

Dr. Colón-Ramos has taken the lessons he’s learned about connectivity and applied them beyond the bench, finding ways to link two of his loves: science and Puerto Rico.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, August 17, 2015  – A diverse team of 16 prominent scientists and educators today announced the launch of a high-profile collaboration that seeks to leverage knowledge from the scientific community to confront the dangers to the U.S. biomedical science enterprise.  Named Rescuing Biomedical Research, the effort tackles the problems identified in several public statements that the team and the scientific community have made, and aims to take the next steps towards making substantive, concerted changes in the way U.S.

Judith Enck, regional director for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), recoginized that the process of decontamination and cleaning in Vieques is dragging feet and has deficiencies, even more so if you take into account that the U.S. government doesn't even have a plan to remove the explosives left underwater by the NAVY.
