Students from the José Rodríguez de Soto Elementary School in Guánica won the Internationla Photography Contest of UNESCO's Sandwatch Program. For a year the students documented the changes ocurring in their hometown's beaches.

The Departament of Agriculture of Puerto Rico has been blamed for the destruction of 240 acres of wetlands around the Guánica lagoon by a local conservation group.
