The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, part of the National Institutes of Health, has awarded $19 million for the next five years to the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sci-ences Campus to continue facilitating the development of competitive research being conducted by the Center for Collaborative Research in Minority Health and Health Disparities.

The National Institute of General Medicine (NIGMS) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) granted $150,000 to the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) for a study on pharmaceuticals to block metastatic breast cancer cells.

A study on Alzheimer's disease to be conducted in Puerto Rico is recruiting volunteers. The Amaranth study will test a drug that attacks Alzheimer's disease in its early phase by avoiding the formation of the amyloid plaques that deposit in the brain and cause neuron damage.
