Resource Center for Distance Education receives grant to create professional certification in Computer Science

The Resource Center for Distance Education (CREAD), attached to the Dean's Office of Academic Affairs of the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez Campus (RUM), received a grant of $537,800.00 from the 21st Century Technical and Business Education Fund of the Puerto Rico Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC). The grant will be used to establish the CREAD Computer Science Academy, an educational program for professional certification in Computer Science, which will provide a credential in nine to 12 months.

In a world where numbers and equations are usually seen as cold and abstract, in math they found so much more. Mónica Colón Vargas and Geraldo Enrique Soto Rosa, who in the same exciting weekend, graduated with a 4.00 grade point average from the Department of Mathematical Sciences of the University of Mayagüez Campus (RUM) and joined their lives in marriage. In addition, they were admitted to pursue doctoral studies at Brown University, a prestigious Ivy League university. 

RUM team placed runner-up in NASA competition

The Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) student chapter of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Mayagüez Campus (RUM) won second place in the 2023 Revolutionary Aerospace Systems Concepts Academic Linkage (RASC-AL) Forum of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). 

This is the fifth time the students have participated in the competition, in which they achieved three consecutive championships from 2018 to 2021. This year, they presented the PROMISE: Permanent Research Outpost for Mars and Interplanetary Space Exploration mission, which met the challenge imposed in this edition to send four astronauts to Mars and have them survive there for seven years.

The Sea Grant Program of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) based at the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez Campus (RUM), published the Surfeando PR portal, a map that uses the Google My Maps platform, to illustrate the locations and descriptions of some of the beaches that are most recognized for surfing.

RUM research group contributes to collaborative project with million-dollar NSF grant

Clara E. Isaza Brando and Mauricio Cabrera Ríos, Ph.D., from the Departments of Biology and Industrial Engineering at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Mayagüez Campus (RUM), are team members of the EMBRIO Institute, a multidisciplinary and collaborative project with U.S. universities, funded with $12.5 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF), whose objective is to identify how cells organize themselves to fight attack and ensure their ability to survive at scales ranging from single cell to cell responses to tissue and wound closure. 

RUM Graduate named to the Engineering Hall of Fame

Rey Almodóvar, a graduate of the Industrial Engineering Department of the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez Campus (RUM), was inducted into the Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame (AEHOF), a distinction that was created in 1987 by the then governor of that state that recognizes the excellence of outstanding individuals, companies and associated projects in that U.S. jurisdiction.

Scientists from the Department of Marine Sciences (DCM) of the University of Puerto Rico's Mayagüez Campus (RUM) are raising concerns about the accelerated deterioration of the quality of the environment and the state of the marine communities that make up the ecosystem of the La Parguera Nature Reserve (RNLP), the most developed in Puerto Rico.

Students Camila Alejandra Pagán Melvin and Alysa Michelle Alejandro Soto, both from the Biology Department of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Mayagüez Campus (RUM), received the John C. Johnson Award for winning first and third place, respectively, in the poster competition of the National Biology Honor Society, Beta Beta Beta Beta Beta (ββββ), at its recent district convention, Caribbean region, which was held in virtual format.

For the third consecutive year, the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, will celebrate Arduino Day. This event is organized and directed by MakerspacePR, the first maker community in the island. The event will be held on Saturday, April 1 at 9:00 am in the Business Administration Building.
