The purpose of Caribe Wave 2017 is to improve the efficacy of the Tsunami Alert Systems in Caribbean Coasts. This provides an opportunity for the emergency management organizations of the region to test their operational communication lines and promote the preparation in the event of tsunamis.

For the eight consecutive year, the Red Sísmica de Puerto Rico (RSPR), affiliated to the Geology Department at the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez, together with federal, local and regional agencies, will carry out the tsunami drill named CaribeWave 2016. This exercise will take place on Thursday, March 17, 2017 starting at 10:00 am.

With an average of 1.1 grades Farenheit above the normal temperature, last month was registered as the fifth hottest January in the climatological history of Puerto Rico, according to data from the National Metereology Service.
