The purpose of Caribe Wave 2017 is to improve the efficacy of the Tsunami Alert Systems in Caribbean Coasts. This provides an opportunity for the emergency management organizations of the region to test their operational communication lines and promote the preparation in the event of tsunamis.

For the eight consecutive year, the Red Sísmica de Puerto Rico (RSPR), affiliated to the Geology Department at the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez, together with federal, local and regional agencies, will carry out the tsunami drill named CaribeWave 2016. This exercise will take place on Thursday, March 17, 2017 starting at 10:00 am.

The governor, Alejandro García Padilla, signed an executive order to declare a public health emergency due to the threat of the zika virus epidemic. This executive order goes together with the developed national plan to prevent, protect and treat this disease.

The protocol of removing beehives in Puerto Rico by several federal agencies is under revision in order to protect the hives. The bees play an important role in seed dispersion in the ecosystems around the Island.
