Congratulations to our Executive Director, Dr. Giovanna Guerrero-Medina, who was recognized as an Outstanding Research and Professional Mentor at the 2023 National Diversity in STEM Conference of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos Hispanics and native Americans in Science, also known as SACNAS.

The Yale Ciencia Academy welcomes a new class of young science leaders

This summer, 16 young science leaders from 15 institutions across the U.S. and Puerto Rico kicked off their year as fellows of the NIH-funded Yale Ciencia Academy (YCA) for Career Development. Led by Yale University’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, in collaboration with the non-profits Ciencia Puerto Rico and Science Communication Labs, YCA equips biomedical and health sciences PhD students from historically marginalized backgrounds with the knowledge, skills, and networks they need to find great postdoctoral positions that will further their academic interests and career goals.

Funding for the Yale Ciencia Academy has been renewed!

For the past five years, the Yale Ciencia Academy (YCA) has provided almost 200 doctoral students with critical tools, skillsets, outreach opportunities, and an expansive mentoring network to promote career advancement. We are thrilled to announce that the competitive grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that funds the YCA (R25GM114000) has been renewed for another five years! The new YCA (or YCA Phase 2) will have a slightly different focus: the PhD to postdoc transition. However, the program will stay true to its core mission: to enhance biomedical training through (1) skills development, (2) community, and (3) outreach.

Yale Ciencia Academy Fellows and Alumni Respond to COVID-19

One of the pillars of the Yale Ciencia Academy (YCA) is that beyond their research, our scientists can contribute to society through science communication and public engagement. As part of their program year, YCA Fellows participate in science communication training and complete one outreach activity of their choice to engage with a community they care about. Since 2016, YCA Fellows have completed 150 outreach projects including blogs, newspaper articles, op-eds, and podcasts; lesson plans for educators and school visits; panels, workshops and conferences; public lectures; new science communication and advocacy initiatives; and hurricane relief efforts. The COVID-19 pandemic has been no exception.

2018 Yale Ciencia Fellows help launch a science policy network, deliver professional development sessions at national STEM conferences and more

As part of their training and leadership development, Yale Ciencia Academy (YCA) fellows are required to create and implement a science outreach activity of their choosing. These outreach projects are meant to expand the impact of the program, by allowing YCA fellows to engage with young people, teachers, or other members of the public, particularly from communities traditionally underrepresented and underserved in science. In 2018, YCA Fellows completed a variety of projects, impacting more than 6,000 people.
