Dr. Erasmo Nieves-Martinez is a former Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute/Graduate STEM public policy fellow. He worked for the Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, Representative John Larson (CT-01), where he was tasked with legislative projects for the Seniors Task Force. Through his work at the House Democratic Caucus, Mr. Nieves-Martinez assisted on legislative projects with the purpose of increasing health care access and strengthening Social Security. Mr. Nieves-Martinez holds a doctorate degree in neuroscience specializing in neurocognitive aging from Wake Forest University, School of Medicine, and a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras. Prior to his work in Congress, he worked as a graduate research assistant at Wake Forest University. The results of his research project became central in the understanding of the role of growth hormone in cognitive function and the effects of aging across cognitive domains, receptor function and cognitive decline. In 2011, his investigations on the role of growth hormone on cognition were highlighted by researchers from the University of Oxford for their contribution to the understanding of the effects of growth hormone deficiency and memory. Currently, Dr. Nieves-Martinez works at the National Hispanic Council on Aging on resource development. Among his areas of interest and current projects are community-based participatory research, Alzheimer’s disease and healthy aging.
