About Me:
I am a limnologist, or someone that studies the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of inland waters. I started the study of limnology about 20 years ago when my science teacher, Maria Aguirre, inspired me to study a small lake near my house. That first project allow me to focus my college studies in environmental sciences. I obtained a BS in Environmental Sciences from the University of Puerto Rico. In 1998, I obtained a PhD degree in Environmental, Population, and Organismic Biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Since 1986, I worked in several hydrologic investigations with the US Geological Survey in San Juan, PR and in Denver, Colorado. From 1998 to 2003, I worked as an environmental consultant for a private firm in Puerto Rico. Since 2003, I am developing a research program in tropical limnology at the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras.
Project Info:
My research interests are: carbon cycling in rivers, nitrogen fluxes from tropical watersheds, hydrology, and water quality. I am also involved in initiatives to promote integrated water resources management in tropical developing countries such as the UNESCO Hydrology for the Environment, Life, and Policy (HELP) Program and the Global Water Partnership.
