UPR Cayey program selected among the best in the U.S.

The Institute of Interdisciplinary Research UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO AT CAYEY  was selected among four programs from across the United States as the 2022 Exemplars of Excellence.

The four selected programs were chosen for their evidence-based efforts to promote Latino student success in higher education and the workforce from among 93 submissions and 20 finalists. The four programs are based in Puerto Rico, New Jersey, Texas and Indiana.

Supporting Puerto Rico after Hurricane Fiona

On Sunday, September 18, 2022, Hurricane Fiona made landfall in southwestern Puerto Rico, the same area most impacted by the 2020 earthquakes. Fiona has left a catastrophic amount of rain and damage across the archipelago. Most people are without power and many are without water. All this, just days before the five-year anniversary of Hurricane María today, on September 20th. Puerto Rico has barely recovered from the man-made disaster that followed that storm, the legacies of which are still physically and emotionally present.

Mayagüez - Students from the Centro Residencial de Oportunidades Educativas de Mayagüez, known by its acronym CROEM, placed first in the competition of the "ROADS on Icy World" project carried out by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), where more than fifty (50) schools in the United States competed.

Puerto Rican students receive awards in prestigious scholarship programs

We would like to congratulate Dr. Nicolle Rosa Mercado, a Borinqueña who was recently selected for the ultra-competitive Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program. A graduate of the University of Puerto Rico, Cayey, and Yale University for her PhD, Nicolle was also part of our Yale Science Academy program in 2017. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University.

RUM student receives $10,000 from prestigious Google video game grant

Nicole Noemí Román Correa is the only young woman enrolled at the University of Puerto Rico to be part of the select group of scholarship recipients.


University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez Campus (RUM) student Nicole Noemí Román Correa was selected to receive the Generation Google Scholarship for Women in Gaming 2022.

The scholarship will grant her $10,000 to cover her study expenses and an invitation to a virtual conference to meet the other winners and Google leaders.

Puerto Rican microbial ecologists represent Puerto Rico at ISME18, the International Congress on Microbial Ecology in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The prestigious congress of the International Society for Microbial Ecology, brought together Puerto Rican scientists representing the science they do in Puerto Rico and other labs in the diaspora.
