The cucubano (Pyrophorus luminosus) is an endemic species of Puerto Rico. (Ramón Tonito Zayas)

The threats that the cucubano (a species of Puerto Rican click beetle) has faced for the last half century are leading scientists to hypothesize that the insect—know for its bioluminescence—is endangered, although thee are no scientific studies confirming this yet.
