For the first time since 1992, when the Puerto Rican parakeet aviary was established in the Río Abajo State Forest in this municipality, more than 200 will fly freely in their habitat, after 60 chicks were born in the wild during this breeding season, which runs through June.

More than 50% of the population of Puerto Rican parrots, which is an endangered species, disappeared after Hurricane Maria destroyed its habitat and food source. Only two of the 60-65 birds who lived in El Yunque survived the category 4 storm.

Several studies done at the University of Puerto Rico inform on the impact of an invasive species, the phillipine orchid (Spathoglottis plicata), which competes with the native species of orchid Bletia patula. They urge the public not to take and replant this exotic orchid in order to control the dispersion of the plant and the effects on the ecosystem.

A team composed of members from state and federal agenicies and biologists, freed 31 Puerto Rican Parrots in the Maricao State Forest with the objective that they reproduce in the wild. This is part of the initiative focused on increasing the parrot population in order to remove it from the list of endangered species.
