Join Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR) as a Civic Science Fellow to help us improve scientists’ capacity to engage different audiences with science in culturally relevant and inclusive ways.

The CienciaPR Civic Science Fellow is an ideal position for someone with experience and interests in different aspects of civic science (science communication, outreach, community engagement, communication research, etc.). This fellowship is a remarkable opportunity to work with diverse stakeholders, including scientists, communicators, community and organizational leaders, policy makers, and educators, and help advance justice, equity, and inclusion in science.

Specifically, CienciaPR’s Civic Science Fellow will help us (1) evaluate the impact of CienciaPR’s culturally relevant strategies across our programs; (2) understand how CienciaPR’s work can be a model to advance civic science; and (3) strategize to increase our capacity to train more scientists in culturally relevant strategies and foster their civic participation.

For the past 15 years, CienciaPR has been a leader in promoting the role of science and the public engagement of scientists in Puerto Rico. Our work has focused on applying culturally relevant strategies across our programs in science communication and outreach, K-12 education, professional development, and advocacy to put science in service of Puerto Rican society. What we do sits at the intersection of science, media, education, justice, equity, and inclusion.

CienciaPR’s Civic Science Fellow will help strengthen our capacity, continue building cross-sectional collaborations, further our understanding of how to create strong and inclusive connections between science and society, and communicate the broader applicability of our work.

The Civic Science Fellow will work closely with CienciaPR’s Director of Communications and Science Outreach and the Executive Director and be part of a tight-knit, dedicated team of science engagement and science education professionals. The Civic Science Fellow will have the chance to engage and connect with scientists, students, and educators from the vibrant Ciencia Puerto Rico community (>15K global members), as well as with the public, members of the media, and some of the many civic society and community leaders that are among the organization’s collaborators.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Take leadership over ongoing efforts to document and assess CienciaPR’s contributions to culturally relevant science communication and public engagement and distill key strategies and lessons to facilitate the integration of science and society.
  • Write a public report (potentially a scholarly manuscript) of the findings to contribute to the advancement of civic science scholarship.
  • Develop an online curriculum and a set of case studies to help CienciaPR improve its capacity to train more scientists and help others adopt culturally relevant strategies to make science communication and engagement more inclusive and encourage the civic participation of scientists.

The individual will be part of the  Civic Science Fellows Program, which seeks to catalyze widespread, meaningful, and inclusive engagement at the interface of science and society. The program brings together an interdisciplinary network of journalists, bench and social scientists, community-facing practitioners, content creators, public-interest organizations, and funders to develop evidence-based, human-centered approaches to better connect science with diverse communities. Civic science goes beyond science outreach, seeking to create equitable frameworks and relationships so people of every background are part of creating emerging science and making choices to guide it, so its power benefits all. The benefits of being a Civic Science Fellow include access to a network of Fellows at other institutions, professional development in subject matter as well as leadership skills, and mentoring.
