The National Science Foundation’s Division of Integrative Organismal Systems (IOS) is seeking qualified candidates to fill two permanent Program Director positions in its Neural Systems Cluster (NSC).  The Neural Systems Cluster supports the basic mechanisms underlying functions of the nervous system and its interactions with the physical and social environments. The Cluster focuses on the use of comparative species approaches to better understand how organisms perceive their environment, transduce that information in the nervous system and respond appropriately. Research supported by the NSC span multiple levels of analysis ranging from the molecular and cellular to the complex behavioral aspects of organisms functioning in their natural environments. NSF Program Directors bear the primary responsibility for carrying out the agency's overall mission to support innovative and merit-reviewed activities in basic research and education that contribute to the nation's technical strength, security, and welfare. To fulfill this responsibility requires not only knowledge in the appropriate disciplines, but also a commitment to high standards, a considerable breadth of interest and receptivity to new ideas, a strong sense of fairness, good judgment, and a high degree of personal integrity.  Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in biology or related field with an emphasis in one of the areas administered by IOS. Candidates must also have at least six years of successful research, research administration, or scientific or academic managerial experience beyond the Ph.D.  Familiarity with NSF policies and practices, administrative experience, and recognized stature among peers are desirable.
