The Synergistic Partnership for Research and Education on Nanostructured and Functional Materials of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez is a proyect that started in 2004 when the University received a $2.7 million grant for five year from the National Science Foundation to do research in material sciences focusing on nanotechnology. Thanks to PREM, hundreds of high school students have discovered nanotechnolgy.

Nanotechnology is the future made reality today for doctor Marcelo Suárez, professor of the Department of Engineering and Material Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez (RUM) and director of the Partnership for Research and Education on Nanostructured and Functional Materials (PREM). Professors at RUM use nanotechnology in research to treat cancer and help improve the resistance and quality of different materials.

The thermohaline current (THC) originates in superficial waters of the North Atlantic near the coast of Labrador, in Canada, where due to its high density the current sinks into the ocean traveling south through the bottom of the ocean. Puerto Rican Joxel García has been nominated to be Medical Director in the Regular Corps of the Public Health Service, Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services, and Representative of the United States on the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO).
