What do Albert Einstein and the Arecibo Observatory have in common? Twenty-years ago Joseph Taylor and Russell Hulse won a Nobel Prize for their discovery of pulsars, using the Arecibo Observatory to detect these binary stars. This discovery offered evidence of Einstein's theory of relativity.

Two student members of EDRA-"Estudiantes Dispuestos a la Restauración Ambiental" (Students Willing to Restore the Environment) from Caño Martín Peña in San Juan have been selected to present their work in San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. Reiner and Edgar Echavarria will present their work: "Pollinating agricultural efforts from the school and community" at the IV International School Gardens Network.

In this article, part of our collaboration with El Nuevo Día, Wilson González Espada explains what happens when technology jumps ahead of science and launches products that have not been tested for safety. Some examples include X-rays, the pigment green of Paris, radioactive materials sold as energy boosters and recently, some pain medications that ended up having adverse cardiovascular effects.

Dr. Joseph M. Campos, secretary for the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) praised the work of the Puerto Rico Society of Microbiologists (SMPR) as a "miracle" at their annual conference. In the last two years SMPR has presented 12 student chapters, the most in the U.S.

An interdisciplinary group of scientists from UPR Rio Piedras, including Dr. Claudia P. Ruiz-Díaz (Department of Environmental Sciences), Carlos Toledo-Hernández and Alberto M. Sabat (Department of Biology), and Mariano Marcano (Department of Computer Sciences) developed a research study that examined the immune response of corals of the species Gorgonia ventalina from a mathematical simulation perspective.

Scientists Isha Alexander and Keith Geluso used innovative field techniques to capture bats at Vieques Island. This information will be used to quantify the species of bats living in Vieques and to estimate their population, which is essential for developing management plans.

If you ask the average Puerto Rican student the name of five wild animals, the answer will probably contain animals such as lion, elephant, giraffe, hippopotamus, or zebra. Rarely will they mention fauna from their own archipelago. The reason is probably that these native animals are seldom mentioned in textbooks or classrooms. Dr. Eddie Laboy Nieves has undertaken a project to change the Puerto Rican public's knowledge of their own fauna. The Puerto Rican Fauna Videoteque collects over 210 videos of animals endemic to our islands.
