Two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, and many have yet to learn that the way out of the global emergency is not through individualism and nationalism, but through solidarity.

More than 3 billion people around the world remain unvaccinated, in part because of vaccine hoarding by wealthy nations like the U.S. Beyond the coronavirus’ biology, the main reason COVID-19 continues to rage is such failures of solidarity – in government, public policy, messaging, and civic society.

Before I started studying pharmacy, my mother used to tell me often that she did not feel quite right, she was always tired and had been recently gaining some weight without any apparent trigger or change in eating habits. It never occurred to me that these symptoms were the onset of hypothyroidism. After being diagnosed, my mother joined the number of people suffering from the thyroid, along with my grandmother and grandfather and many other Puerto Ricans.

Less than two months ago, the Puerto Rico Medical Center identified an outbreak of hepatitis A in which at least 26 hospital employees were affected. Despite the shock the news provoked, most readers were oblivious, and possibly still are, as to the nature of this particular virus (such as the fact that it is not transmitted by sheer proximity, or by sneezing, by example).

In 2009 we saw the global hysteria that can take hold after an uncontrolled influenza outbreak.  The disease caused by the H1N1 virus, known as swine flu, infected hundreds of millions of people around the world.  In the United States, recent estimates show that the virus may have infected up to 90 million people and claimed around 12,500 lives.

They say it's better to prevent than to deal with an issue after it’s too late.  In no other aspect of our daily life is this more true and important than when it comes to our health. Every day we make decisions that sooner or later will affect us. As time goes on, if we haven’t paid attention to these decisions nor taken care of our physical and emotional health, the body and the mind are going to pass the bill.

They say ithat an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In no other aspect of our daily life it is this more true and important than when it comes to our health. Every day we make decisions that in the long or short term will affect us. With the passage of time, if we have not paid attention to these decisions and have taken care of our physical and emotional health, body, and mind we are going to pass the bill. Many times we take health decisions that affect us negatively without having all the necessary information, or perhaps have we have some information but it is not correct or it comes from reliable sources.
