RUM solar boat regains championship in Ohio competition

The UPRM Solar Boat team, composed of students from the College of Engineering of the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez Campus (RUM), won the championship in the Solar Splash 2023 competition, which was recently held in Springfield, Ohio.  

The collegiate collective, composed of four students from the departments of Electrical Engineering (INEL) and Computers (ICOM); and Mechanics (INME), obtained an overall score of 953.74 out of 1,000. With this feat, they regained the world championship title by winning the George Ettenheim Memorial trophy that they had achieved, for the first time, in 2021. Last year they were runners-up.

Casa Pueblo, a grassroots and community-based organization in Adjuntas has developed an initiative called "50% con Sol", which aims for half of the energy produced in Puerto Rico to be sourced from the sun by 2027.

Apply for the Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon

This Solar Decathlon, which spans 2019 and 2020, gives teams the option to participate in one of two Challenges: the Design Challenge or the Build Challenge. Teams that enter the Design Challenge must select from six allowable building types to create their design. Teams that enter the Build Challenge must choose to compete with a “Local Build” house or with a transportable “National Showcase” house.

Vieques wildlife refuge generates its own electricity

The National Wildlife Refuge in Vieques is the only one of its kind in Puerto Rico to produce its own electricity based on solar power. For that they will be recognized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
