A fundamental question in many fields of biology is how the output of a signaling pathway is regulated. An NIH-funded postdoctoral/research associate position is available in the Wharton lab to study the molecular and cellular basis of BMP ligand and receptor dynamics that ultimately generate a gradient of signaling activity critical for the specification of different cell fates and growth during development. Our previous studies have highlighted the different behaviors of two BMP ligands, Dpp and Gbb, and two type I receptors, Tkv and Sax, in the generation of the pMad gradient required for Drosophila wing patterning and growth. We aim to understand the molecular basis of these differences with regard to signaling output and the spatial regulation of this output.
Priority will be given to highly motivated applicants that have demonstrated expertise in: Drosophila genetics, basic molecular biology and cell biology techniques, and/or biochemistry. Candidate must have a PhD in biology, genetics, biochemistry, or developmental biology with 3-5 years of research experience. Previous experience with Drosophila as a model system is preferred but not required.
