Applications are invited from candidates with a PhD in any of the specializations in College’s Departments of Chemistry; Geosciences; Mathematics & Statistics; and Physics & Astronomy. The Fellow will be provided with strong mentorship from a faculty mentor in the Fellow’s department, a mentor from the School of Graduate Studies and mentor support by programming of the Black Studies and Latina/Latino Studies programs. UMKC is an urban serving, public, research university committed to serving the needs of Kansas City and the underserved communities in the region. As an institution with a commitment to diversity and social justice, UMKC is very cognizant of the dearth of under-represented minorities in the STEM Faculty pipeline. As a result, we have organized institutional funding for this Fellowship to help meet the broad needs of our community. The goal of this Postdoctoral Fellowship is to support the early development of scholars who are from historically underrepresented groups. Fellows who take advantage of this opportunity will be mentored in all aspects of faculty responsibilities, including research activities, teaching and advising to address the needs of under-represented minorities in STEM courses and in research, and experiencing some service commitments to prepare for a faculty position. The Fellow will have the opportunity to develop and sharpen their research skills, learn and gain experience in classroom teaching, and learn the nuances of being a faculty member including tenure and promotion strategies associated with a faculty position. The intent of this program is to develop the Fellow into a competitive candidate for faculty positions through a vigorous mentoring program. As part of the Fellowship experience, the Fellow will complete UMKC’s graduate certificate program in College Teaching and Career Readiness to develop skills as an excellent teacher and well-rounded faculty colleague. Minimum Qualifications Well-qualified applicants who have recently earned a PhD in Chemistry, Geosciences, Mathematics & Statistics, or Physics & Astronomy, including current doctoral students who expect to earn their PhD degree by September 1, 2017. The goal of the Kentucky Bridge to a Biomedical Doctorate for Appalachian Students program is to provide students with training for success in doctoral programs and careers in biomedical research. This joint initiative between Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) and the University of Kentucky (UK) targets students for funding from Appalachia and other under-represented groups in biomedical sciences.

La espinita de escribir sobre ciencias: cómo me hice voluntario de CienciaPR

El 20 de marzo del 2007 es un día único en mi carrera profesional. Ese día salió publicado en la sección de ciencia de El Nuevo Día el primer artículo científico que escribí, bajo el título “Blanco de gripe aviar las aves domésticas”. Tres semanas más tarde, el 2 de abril, salió publicado mi tercer artículo. Éste, llamado “Plutón va al sicólogo,” es especial ya que fue el primero de muchos en el que usé la técnica de “ficción científica” y el humor para educar sobre conceptos de ciencia, en este caso por qué a Plutón lo sacaron de la lista tradicional de planetas.

Un reconocido postulado matemático dice que “entre dos puntos se puede trazar exactamente una línea recta”. Nuestra realidad, por supuesto, es mucho más complicada que esto. El camino de vida de una persona es más como las curvas de la PR-1 o la “La Piquiña”.

Un ejemplo perfecto de esto lo es el científico James Ayala González, quien empezó su vida profesional como músico de jazz y hoy día es investigador del comportamiento en la Base de Investigación de Reproducción del Panda Gigante de Chengdu en la provincia Sichuan de la República Popular China.
