Alzheimer's disease: We can reduce the risk

Promoting early detection of Colorectal Cancer

For many people, reaching the age of 50 marks the beginning of an important stage in their lives. Many take the opportunity to reflect on their experiences, achievements, and wishes to fulfill. But we should also recognize that no matter how young and full of energy we feel, it is natural that with age certain changes occur that affect the normal functioning of our body. This is why, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS), every person should have a screening test for colorectal cancer starting at the age of 50.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. In Puerto Rico, it is the second most common type of cancer. It is also recognized as the second leading cause of cancer death for women, as well as the third cause for men.

"Women are able to hold many roles and to succeed in each one of them", affirmed Dr. Ingrid Montes, Chemistry Professor at UPR-RP. Dr. Montes became the first hispanic woman to be elected to the Board of General Directors of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

The human papillomavirus: beyond cervical cancer

The teenage years usually leave strong memories that persist for the rest of our lives. These are years of many changes, much growth, physical and emotional, and consequently, the loss of innocence and the beginning of responsibilities. For young people, one of these responsibilities, shared with their parents, is associated with the decision to be vaccinated or not against the human papillomavirus (HPV). Vaccination is recommended as a preventive measure against the possibility of developing cervical cancer later on, should they become infected with the virus .

I must confess that the first time I heard someone say that they were suffering from the thyroid, I figured "duhthiroy" was the name of a strange disease that I would not encounter often. It was not until much later that I understood the importance of the thyroid gland, whose role is vital to maintaining the balance in our bodies and therefore a sense of well-being. Thyroid diseases are even more common than diabetes, and yet, not much is heard about them. It is estimated that over 30 million Americans have thyroid problems, and that up to half of these have not yet been diagnosed.

SAN JUAN – The $2.4 million that the Government of Puerto Rico, via the Science, Technology & Research Trust (PRST), invested in 60 startup companies has begun to show results.

The first two generations of startups that went through Puerto Rico-based accelerator Parallel18 (P18) achieved, between April 2016 and April 2017, global sales of $13.99 million, of which $7.99 million was generated on the island.

The Station for the Detection of Spores and Fungi from the Medical Sciences Campus at the University of Puerto Rico has joined the 'Worldwide Pollen Monitoring Map’ from the ZAUM Center for Allergies and the Environment in Germany. This interactive map shares information on the levels of fungi, pollen, dessert dust and other allergens, and being included in this initiative is recognition of the work being done at UPR-RCM.
