Biology Chapter at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez received several awards

The Biology Chapter Zeta Alpha at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez received several awards at the 62 Regional (Caribbean) Convention of the National Honor Biology Society. Several members of the chapter received awards and the Chapter recieved the award Dr. Boyd B. Palmer, as the best chapter of the Caribbean region.

Awardees:
Karina N. Ruiz Esteves and Fabio L. Tarazona Tubens- 1st place for oral presentations

Rocío del M. Saavedra Peña- 2nd place for oral presentation

Informatics Enterprise Acknowledge Puertorican Talent

A group of students from several campuses of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) received fellowships from Rock Solid Technologies. The Rock Solid 2015 fellowship recipients were:

Melinda Vargas Ramos- Majoring in Computarized Math at UPR- Humacao

Juan Octavio Cortés Mulero- majoring in Accounting at UPR- Humacao

Javier Ruiz Vélez- majoring in Accounting and computer Sciences at UPR-Rio Piedras

Alberic Dávila Cadilla- majoring in Computer Sciences at UPR- Bayamón

Three students from the University of Puerto Rico awarded at the ERN in STEM conference

Three students from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez received the 1st place in different categories at the Emerging Researchers National Conference (ERN) in STEM during February 19-21 in Washington DC. The ERN conference is sponsored by AAAS and NSF.

UPR-Humacao shines at annual biomedical research conference

Two students from the Biology Deparment at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao Campus were awarded for their reearch presentations at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABCRMS) during November in San Antonio, Texas.

Giovani Deliz, junior in the General biology program and Raiza Reyes, junior under a Microbiology major were recognized along another 11 students among 1700 participant students. ABRCMS is one of the biggest research conference for underepresented minority students and is funded by the American Society of Microbiology under an NIH grant.

Students from UPR- Rio Piedras shine in national competition

Students from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras (UPR-RP), shone bright again in the recent edition of the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) by obtaining 8 awards in various categories. This is the largest professional conference for students in the field of biomedical and behavioral science that takes place in the United States (US) and this year it took place in San Antonio, Texas. 

Some 57 students from the on campus undergraduate research programs "Minority Access to Research Career (MARC)" and "Research Inititative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE)" participated in the event and presented 31 scientific works as posters and oral presentations.

UPR Río Piedras alum receives medal of honor from NASA

2014 was a year of triumphs for Puerto Rican Julie Ann Rivera Pérez, who received a medal of honor from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and was selected to participate in a very competitive leadership program in the agency.

Rivera Perez earned the Medal of Equal Employment from NASA for promoting diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities for the Hispanic community through her initiatives as president of the Hispanic Advisory Committee for Employees (HACE) for the past two years. In addition, leadership and job performance earned her a coveted seat in the NASA First Program, whose purpose is to identify and train the future leaders of the agency.

Melody: Future Biochemist Collects the Harvest of her Seeds of Success

We all know about the difficult economic situation that our country is going through, but there are always opportunities for those who give their best. The young lady Melody Rivera Hernández, from Vega Alta, is in her way to complete her university carrier in the biochemistry area with all expenses covered. She is the first puertorrican student, born and raised in the Island to receive the prestigious scholarship “Torch Scholars” to complete her bachelor degree in the Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.

Committed to fostering interest in the study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers, the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao (UPRH) hosted more than 30 students participating in the Seeds of Success program, sponsored by the non-profit organization Ciencia Puerto Rico.

In the laboratory of Dr. Manuel Díaz-Ríos at the University of Puerto Rico’s Institute of Neurobiology, the students and personnel not only study how the motor nervous system functions and how it is affected with trauma or degenerative diseases, but they also learn the value of volunteer work and have the opportunity to teach kids and the community about science. Manolo (as he is known by his friends) firmly believes how important it is for scientists to contribute beyond the walls of the lab through education and mentoring.

Legislative project 812 aspires to amend the definition of the terrestrial maritime zone in Puerto Rico beaches. Experts in the field of oceanography explained that the legislation would reduce the protected coastal areas as public property and facilitate the privatization of beach access.

Last week molecular biologist Juan Ramirez-Lugo put all his coral samples in the freezer, locked the door of his lab, and told his six undergraduate assistants to stay home the next day. The assistant professor of biology at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) in San Juan wasn’t happy about yet another disruption to his research on seasonal variations in how corals respond to thermal stress and his efforts to give undergraduates “authentic research experiences.” But he felt he had no choice.
