The Boricua Science Community Responds to COVID-19

Mónica Ivelisse Feliú-Mójer's picture

We are facing a pandemic of the new Sar-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes the respiratory disease COVID-19. The situation has disrupted everyone's lives in unprecedented ways. We understand that there is much concern and uncertainty, and that the situation is constantly and rapidly evolving. That is why the CienciaPR Team has activated its #CienciaBoricua community to educate, inform, and promote the well-being of our people. As always, in this emergency, we are ready to put science in service of Puerto Rico.

MUSA, the RUM Museum commemorates the birth of Dr. Agustín Stahl

The genius of Agustín Stahl survives the times. Beyond his profession as a physician, he was an artist and lover of flora and fauna. This is how he combined his multiple talents to bequeath a scientific and artistic work through the generations. This is a series of watercolors showing, with great precision, different specimens that he collected while visiting his patients in their homes.

DNA tests confirm that the Paso Fino horse originates solely from the Puerto Rican Criollo horse

A new study conducted by professors and students from the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Mayagüez Campus (RUM), in collaboration with scientists from the United States, Ukraine and Sweden, confirms that the Paso Fino horse originated from the Puerto Rican Criollo horse, with no genetic contribution from other South American Paso horses.

José A. Rodríguez-Martínez: Interrogating Proteins

Lorraine Doralys Rodriguez-Rivera's picture

Translated by Charlene Rivera-Bonet

Did you know that the colors of butterflies, the development of the heart and the resistance of certain bacteria to peroxide have something in common? They are all a result of the interaction between proteins and nucleic acids (such as DNA). Discovering and understanding the interactions between these two molecules essential for life is important to explain different biological processes, which is the goal of Dr. José A. Rodríguez Martínez. As a principal investigator and assistant professor at the University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras (UPR-RP), he developed a technique to interrogate any protein and ask, which nucleic acid sequence do you interact with?

Ciencia al Servicio "Kit" for STEM educators

As part of its initiative for STEM educators in response to natural disasters, CienciaPR have designed a prototype of an "emergency kit"  for teachers containing accessible and reproducible educational material, with content aligned  to  the Department of Education' of Puerto Rico’s science and math standards (and with the ability to align to other subject standards)  for  elementary, intermediate and higher levels (regular and Montessori), along with guidelines for its implementation. Educational material can be used outside the traditional classroom and does not require the use of electrical power, and/or advanced technology. Materials in each "kit" can cover content for approximately 3-5 months.
