In an effort to drive the development of the next generation of innovators, scientists, and engineers, Toyota de Puerto Rico and the nonprofit organization Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR) announced a strategic alliance to strengthen science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in public high schools and specialized schools across Puerto Rico.

Given the recent natural disasters and the public health emergency that we are facing, Ciencia Puerto Rico continues to be committed to the educators and students of Puerto Rico, who have seen their teaching and learning process interrupted, first by a sequence of earthquakes and now by the COVID-19 pandemic. This new crisis (the third in last three years) highlights how important it is to develop strategies and tools that ensure the continuity and resilience of the education system.

When a natural disaster affects the physical structure of classrooms and schools, the continuity of education is typically impacted. Depending on the severity of the disaster, educators and students may spend long periods without teaching or learning. This has been the case for Puerto Rico, an archipelago located in a geographical area vulnerable to climate change, and exposed to storms, hurricanes and seismic activity.
