Undergraduate students showcase their inventions

Eighteen undergraduate students of the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico (PUPR) presented their inventions with commercial potential, as well as companies they have developed during their college years in a fair held recently at the University. Among the 12 exhibitions were a portable back-pack electrical power generator, a hydroponics system that used solar power and a beach cooler/boom box that operates on solar power.

The Puerto Rican MIT-Harvard Caucus is organizing a conference about how to Re-establish Economic Growth in Puerto Rico. In this conference they will talk about Puerto Rico’s problems and possibilities looking forward to propose and develop some real alternatives. One of the alternatives they already foresee is that education supports the creation of an enterprising ecosystem, where social, cultural and economic alternatives will flourish. Achieving this requires changes in our educational system both at the college and K-12 level.

Students teach about physics

The Society of Physics Students of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez, recently had their Physics Week, celebrating an event where more than 700 students, from fourth to twelfth grade, visited the University and enjoyed talks, workshops and demonstrations to learn about physics. The activity included visits to the electromagnetic and thermodynamics’ laboratories as well as the illustration of concepts through experiments. The students also participated of talks in the Planetarium and lectures about mechanics and waves.

Guayacan is ready

Guayacán, a robot that will represent Puerto Rico in the Bots IQ contest, to be held in Miami from April 9, is ready for the battle. This robot is product of the creativity of a team of Puerto Rican high schools students that will compete against teams of more than 30 high schools from the United States. The purpose of this competition is to use engineering in a novel way and it evaluates design, construction, management, and application.

Students "explore" their brains

The Puerto Rican chapter of the Society for Neuroscience, the Department of Medicine and the Biomedical Sciences Division of the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico, celebrated the activity “Explore your brain”, on Friday, March 16, 2007. In this activity, around 150 high school students had the opportunity to learn about the nervous system, its diseases, and how this fascinating structure is studied. The activity included interactive study stations about neuroanatomy, the senses, memory, addiction, neurological diseases and the spinal cord.

Fellowships in Science and Technology doubled at the UPR

The University of Puerto Rico anticipated that it will distribute this year, for the first time, around $12 million to talented students in sciences and technology, subjects crucial for the economical development of the country. This amount doubles the original estimate of the UPR in the new programs: Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) and the Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) fellowship. This was possible given the large amount of outstanding students in mathematics and sciences studying at the UPR, according to the Associate Vice-presidents of Students, Dr. Jose Luis Cruz Rivera.

Nineteen of the best students in sciences and arts faced each other in the 4th Operation Success (Operación Éxito) competition, held at Puerto Rico’s Museum of Art. The winners of this edition were David Acevedo, of the José Santos Alegría school in Dorado; Kenny Ng, of the José Collado Colón school in Juncos; and Félix Rodríguez, of the Francisco García Boyrie school in Guayama. Operation Success is an interactive competition developed by the Casa Grande organization. It has the support of the Department of Education and sponsors like Banco Popular and El Nuevo Dia.

Students start a Club at RUM

Thirty students of 10th, 11th and 12th grade from the Eugenio María de Hostos High School in Mayagüez, had an initiation last December 12, 2006, as members of the Science and Materials Engineering Club, a project that is part of the initiatives of the Partnership for Research and Education in Materials (PREM) a joint venture of the Engineering Department of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez and the National Science Foundation (NSF). This Club aims to foster interest toward science and materials engineering in high school students. Also, it is a source of future engineers or scientists.
