Search for volunteers to help the Estuary

The San Juan Bay Estuary Consortium is establishing a Voluntary Monitoring Program so people interested and committed to take care and learn about the environment can join their effort. Volunteers will go to the field periodically to observe and collect data on the ecosystem to asses its health. The volunteers would take temperature, oxygen and salinity measures, asses the diversity and abundance of species to see “if the ecosystem is healthy or if there are problems affecting it.” Those interested can call (787) 274-3374.

Helpful tool for pre-college students

The first Student Guide of Puerto Rico, an information tool about superior education institutions in the country, started being distributed yesterday during an activity at Madame Luchetti High School in San Juan. This Guide provides information about universities and their academic offerings, financial aid, time management advice, criteria to select housing or student exchange programs, among others. The Guide will soon have an internet site.

El Morro becomes a laboratory

Students from the Gabriela Mistral High School in San Juan took bacterial and fungal samples from the walls of El Morro, to determine if they can damage and slowly deteriorate the historical structure. This project, directed by Lilliam Casillas and the teacher Egda Morales, has among its purposes to establish collaboration between science students and researchers.

Hatchery in the middle of the city

Students from the Environmental Sciences Laboratory in the Metropolitan University of Puerto Rico are in charge of keeping aquaponic project. This projects aims to grow plants using organic fertilizers from the tilapia fish manure, and at the same time, the plants will serve as a filter so that those fertilizers do not concentrate in the water, harming the fishes.

The Program of Industrial Biotechnology (Biotec) of the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez (RUM) celebrates its Third Annual College Biotechnology Week, that will culminate with the Latin American Congress and of the Caribbean in Biotechnology in which the scientific educative and economic perspectives of this discipline will be discussed. College Biotechnology Week will be from September 18-22, 2006.

Those verses from Bobby Capó's song "SoÒando con Puerto Rico" transport us with their melody to the coasts of Puerto Rico. While taking this trip down memory lane, we relive the experience with the same intensity as if we were physically there. How is it that the brain allow us, just by thinking about it, to feel the tropical sun and dream of Puerto Rico?

In December's issue of the prestigious scientific journal Learning and Memory three articles by Puerto Rican authors were published, and those articles address these mysteries of the human brain.

The Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM) established a collaboprative agreement with Amgen and Harvey Mudd College (HMC) in California to conduct the first global workshops on biotechnology in Puerto Rico.
