14 "eco-schools" receive the "green flag" in Puerto Rico for environmental action

Fourteen schools in Puerrto Rico received the "green flag" yesterday from the Organization for a sustainable environment (OPAS in Spanish) for their work on envionmental issues in their school and their communities.   The "Eco-School" program is in its 5th year and during 2011-2012 more than 6,500 students and 550 teachers were impacted through the efforts in various schools throughout the island.

The Secretary of Economic Development, José Pérez Riera, defended himself against lawsuit allegations saying that he and other government officials "sequestered" the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust, saying that the decisions regarding those funds were made together by the governmental and private trustees of the institution.

Thomas F. Farb, former executive director of the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust has filed a Federal lawsuit against José Pérez Riera, Secretary of Economic Development, and several other government officials, under allegations that the Fortuño Administration "sequestered" at least $100 million of the Trust's funds with the intentions of using them for purposes different to those established by the law that created the Trust.

The Puerto Rico Science, Technology, and Research Trust will sign a collaboration agreement with the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) to develop a Research and Economic Development Institute for Puerto Rico. The initiative will promote collaboration between industry and academia to develop commercial products or technologies.
