The return of the Aramus guarauna

Aramus guarauna, also known as limpkin, carrao, courlan, and crying bird, was made famous in the book Once in Puerto Rico. In 1930 was considered extinct, however in 2012 Carlos Laboy saw several of this bird in Canovanas. Now it has also been seen in Loiza and Luquillo.

Very slow recovery for coral reefs in Vieques and Culebra

Miles of coral reefs in Vieques and Culebra were seriously damaged during decades of military exercises. Recently, researchers at the University of Puerto Rico and NGO Society Marine Environment published a study about the slow recovery of the coral reefs in those areas.

A shark that has been monitored was recently track swimming in the south of Puerto Rico. Researchers at Nova Southeastern University’s Guy Harvey Research Institute (GHRI) announced that “St. Mary’s”, shark's name, was escaping the cold temperatures and was swimming in the Caribbean waters.
