UPR-Mayaguez student received award from the American Society For Engineering Education

Student from UPR-Mayaguez wins second place at NSF conference

Bethzaely Fernández, doctoral student from the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez Campus, won second place in the Chemistry and Chemical Sciences Oral Presentations ­category with her research project titled: Imprinted Zeolite Carbon Composites for the Removal of Contaminants of Emerging Concern from Water.

This is because science is a human and social process.  The people who give value to the new knowledge generated are the scientists themselves who are people just like you and me.

The student Sherley Collado Justiniano, from the Department of Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus, is the first Puerto Rican to be accepted into the combined MD/PhD program of UPR and Yale University.

Award for Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet

Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet, RCMI Principal Investigator at the Medical Sciences Campus was recognized by G Works and the Amgen Foundation as Distinguished Puerto Rican Women in STEM during the opening of the third PR STEM’s Up to the Challenge Education Submit held on March 7, 2017. The award was presented by Ms. Gretchen B. Guzmán, President of G Works, Inc. Dr. Fernández-Repollet shared this distinction with Dr. Álida Ortiz, Professor of Marine Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao and an educator in aspects of use, conservation and management of coastal and marine resources of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

Dr. Agustín Rullán Toro, Rector of the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez Campus (RUM), welcomed 20 new professors who have joined the institution's faculty. 

"This exciting chapter in the institution's educational history, marks a significant milestone in the unwavering commitment we have to provide an education of excellence to future generations," said the Rector. 

He added that since the beginning of the faculty recruitment process in December 2020, the academic departments have worked hard to identify and select the most outstanding candidates.

The collaborations that Dr. Elizabeth Padilla Crespo formed with researchers from the federal Department of Agriculture will allow her to take her work "to the next level".
A research professor from the Aguadilla campus of the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico was the only Puerto Rican chosen, along with seven other U.S. researchers, by the federal Department of Agriculture (USDA) to participate as a Science Fellow in the 2023 Kika de la Garza Fellowship Program.

San Juan, August 1, 2023 - The Inter-American University of Puerto Rico signed collaboration agreements with four universities in India aimed at developing educational efforts with an emphasis on science, research and technology. The respective agreements were established with Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU) in the city of Kanpur, with GLA University (GLAU) in Mathura, Marwadi University in the city of Rajkot in the western state of Gujarat and Kanchi Mamunivar Centre in southern India.

Congress allocates $7.5 million for construction of Aerospace Research Institute at RUM

The U.S. Congress approved an allocation of $7.5 million for the construction of the Aerospace Research Institute (AIR) at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Mayagüez Campus.

The funds, which will be provided to the campus by the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will be used for the construction of a building adjacent to the Department of Mechanical Engineering (INME), which will house state of the art laboratories.
