CienciaPR Supports Educational Continuity in Southwestern Puerto Rico

Greetchen Díaz-Muñoz's picture

It felt like a birthday party. Children running around and playing on the swings. As soon as they arrived, parents asked for the teacher and made their way towards the home-made banners that corresponded with their kids’ grade to sign them up. When the call for the start of classes rang, the little ones started settling down. We had to add a table because there wasn’t space for everyone. Then there weren’t enough chairs, and some kids shared.

From Girl Leaders to Women Leaders in Science

On February 11 the world celebrates International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This day, which recognizes the crucial role of women and girls in science and technology, was established in 2016 through a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly. Some of the most relevant points of this resolution, in my opinion, are the promotion of (1) full and equal participation for women and girls, both in their education, as well as their work environment and (2) full participation by women and girls in decision making in science.

Forging an education at the service of Puerto Rico

We are launching the Educación al Servicio (Education in Service) Blog! To being, we would like to review our CienciaPR initiatives and contributions in the area of STEM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and how these have evolved to influence the educational environment within and outside the classroom.

Scientists in Service of Puerto Rico

Scientists in Service facilitates the participation of professionals and advanced students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (also called STEM disciplines) in the improvement of science education in Puerto Rico through visits to schools to offer a talk or scientific demonstration.

Scientists in Service online is a virtual version of Scientists in Service that allows STEM experts to carry out talks or live demonstrations through the Zoom video-webinar platform and in this way connect with students, no matter their geographical location. To ensure wide access to the largest number of students, the talks are shared through Facebook Live simultaneously and are recorded and archived on You Tube for continuous use.

Post-Hurricane PBL Lessons (NSF)

CienciaPR, in partnership with Yale University, is carrying out a project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The project titled "Evaluation of disaster-related science lesson plans to promote learning continuity after Hurricane Maria", has two main phases:

A. Training teachers and middle school principals to implement PBL science lessons relevant to Puerto Rican culture and related to challenges after the hurricane (drinking water and terrestrial ecosystems)

B. Research a sample of trained schools, with the objective of:

(1) Studying the feasibility to implement science lessons that integrate project-based learning (PBL), after a natural disaster, such as a hurricane.

(2) Studying the impact on participating students on their attitudes towards science and their role in the search for solutions.
